In 2023, the county employed approximately 5,840 individuals, with the largest sectors being public administration (787 employees), health care and social assistance (751 employees), and retail trade (724 employees). 

Major employers in the county encompass a range of sectors:

  • Mining and Materials Processing: Barrick Gold Corporation's Golden Sunlight Mine near Whitehall is a significant employer, focusing on tailings reprocessing. Ash Grove Cement operates a plant in Montana City, contributing to the local economy.
  • Public Administration: The Montana Developmental Center in Boulder employs approximately 300 people, providing services for individuals with developmental disabilities. 
  • Health Care and Social Assistance: Alternative Youth Adventures (Youth Dynamics, Inc.) in Boulder offers residential services for troubled youth, employing around 100 staff members. 
  • Utilities: NorthWestern Energy, with operations in Butte, serves a broad customer base and is a notable employer in the region

The county's strategic location along major transportation routes, including Interstates 15 and 90, supports a robust logistics and services sector. Additionally, the area's rich natural resources and scenic landscapes bolster the agriculture, value-added food, outdoor recreation, and tourism industries.

Jefferson Local Development Corporation (JLDC) is committed to assisting and retaining local businesses, attracting new investment, expanding the tax base, and creating quality jobs across Jefferson County. JLDC collaborates closely with Jefferson County, MSU Extension, and Headwaters RC&D/EDD to secure technical assistance, capital, and programs for businesses. The organization also supports redevelopment initiatives, including the Boulder South Campus reuse project under JLDC’s lease-option.
