At the Jefferson Local Development Corporation (JLDC), our mission is to create a resilient economy across Jefferson County via business assistance and retention, new investment, and job creation. To that end, the JLDC is thrilled to pull back the curtain on one of our most inspiring local success stories: Kristi’s Kiddie Korner in Whitehall, Montana.

Kristi’s Kiddie Korner Supplies High-Quality Childcare

Kristi’s Kiddie Korner in Whitehall represents a gold standard for rural childcare through its unique public-private partnership and commitment to excellence. For nearly two decades, owner and director Kristi Wilson has transformed a personal passion for early childhood development into a cornerstone of the community’s infrastructure.

Kristi’s Kiddie Korner started 18 years ago in Whitehall, originally licensed for six kids that quickly doubled to 12. With demand for childcare high and the district seeking a proven childcare partner to address this essential local need, Wilson quickly determined that more space was needed.

“There was an opportunity through the State of Montana for an expansion grant,” Wilson says. “JLDC helped us apply for that in partnership with Whitehall School District. We were able to expand to a center now licensed for 40 kids.”

The new facility is a part of the Whitehall School District campus and successfully bridges the gap between early daycare and elementary school. The center’s reputation is backed by its 5-STAR rating in the Best Beginnings STARS to Quality program, Montana’s highest designation for childcare excellence. This rating reflects the highest standards in the center’s curriculum, staff, and environment. Learning aligns with Whitehall’s elementary-school requirements, teachers are credentialed and caring, and the space enables children to explore and play in a modern and safe environment.

Childcare Is a Vital Economic Engine

Childcare is not merely a social service; it is critical economic infrastructure as important as roads, power, and high-speed internet. It is the workforce behind the workforce. Without accessible and affordable care, a community’s labor participation rate is artificially capped, particularly among women and early-career professionals.

Beyond the classroom, Kristi’s Kiddie Korner serves as an essential economic driver for Whitehall. By providing reliable, high-quality care, the center enables local parents to remain in the workforce, supporting the town’s broader fiscal health. A robust childcare ecosystem allows a city to maximize its potential, making the region significantly more attractive to site selectors and corporate relocations. It creates jobs and small business opportunities while simultaneously enabling parents to contribute to the broader tax base.

In short, investing in childcare is a high-yield strategy for a competitive workforce and long-term fiscal stability.

Let’s Collaborate

“Jefferson County is a great place for business because of the amount of support here,” Wilson says. “The community is supportive, the governments are supportive, the county is supportive, and we have a great economic development corporation in JLDC who has resources within and reaches out to get businesses what they need.”
